SPF

While many know the higher the number the better and the letters appear on everything from sunscreen to lip balm and even clothing, many do not know what the letters SPF stand for. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. This rating system that allows a person to figure out how many minutes of protection a product will provide them. By multiplying the SPF rating on the product by the amount of time it usually takes for the person to burn without protection, one can determine the right SPF product they will need. For example, for a person who normally burns after 20 minutes of sun, a product with an SPF factor of 2 will provide 40 minutes of protection before sunburn occurs. If the person is going to be out in the sun longer than 40 minutes, they will need a higher SPF.

An SPF chart is also helpful in determining the average SPF rating a person should choose. The chart shows that those with very fair skin should choose an SPF of 30 to 50, while those with very dark skin should opt for an SPF of 2 to 10. Those in the middle are recommended to choose an SPF of 15 to 30. Sunblock should be applied 30 minutes before going out in the sun and should be reapplied often. To get maximum protection, it is not recommended that sunblock from the previous year be used unless it has been kept in a cool shaded place. For more information see International Medical News, 2005 by Doug Brunk on SPF factors.

Even going about a daily routine can expose skin to damage from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Dermatologists recommend women add a tinted moisturizer with an SPF of 15 to their makeup kits. One can find these makeup, powder foundation, SPF tinted products and lipsticks readily available on store shelves. Many exclusive makeup lines carry these products also. Those with sensitive skin or allergies should opt for a paraben free moisturizer with an SPF factor of at least 15. Fair, sensitive skin benefits from a product with an SPF rating of 30 and fragrance free. SPF lotions and moisturizers geared for sensitive skin using natural ingredients are also an option. For men, a moisturizer with an SPF of 15 is also recommended. However, men who work outdoors should opt for a much higher SPF rating. MD Forte has SPF lotions and sunscreens recommended by dermatologists that can be used year round and under makeup.

Since there is no SPF 1000, SPF clothing is the next best thing. SPF sun hats that protect the top of the head, the ears, nose and cheeks are a must when working outdoors. When playing out doors, SPF lotions with SPF protective golf shirts allow players to stay in the game without worry. One can find SPF 50 clothing online in a number of fashionable styles and colors perfect for summer. Men’s, women’s and children’s fashions are available, including SPF swimgear.
