Hypoallergenic Skin Care

With the recent rise in allergies, more and more people are turning to hypoallergenic skincare soaps, lotions and cosmetics. Free of the elements and ingredients that can cause allergic reactions, a mild hypoallergenic skin care product is sometimes the only thing that can be used on ultra sensitive skin. It can be used on any skin type that is sensitive, whether oily, dry or normal. Free of fragrance, preservatives or chemicals such as PABA, those with sensitive skin can use the product freely without worry to adverse reactions. Many hypoallergenic brands use only the most basic of ingredients, forgoing the many thousands of chemicals and other substances available.

Hypoallergenic skin care was born out of the need for products that were not heavily laced with chemicals and fragrances. In the early days of the cosmetics industry, commonly used products did not always agree with the skin of many users. There was little in the way of alternatives until chemists began developing products for women who found the strong greasy concoctions too much for their skin. The lighter formulas allowed women to do away with the adverse reactions that they had been experiencing. It was out of this that many of today's hypoallergenic makeups and skin care lines were born.

The best hypoallergenic skincare is one that uses the least amount of ingredients. The fewer the amount of ingredients present, the less opportunity there will be for an adverse reaction. A pH balanced hypoallergenic skincare product that balances alkalinity is often very helpful in maintaining healthy skin and keeping negative reactions to a minimum. These gentle products are safe to use on the entire body. They are also the best option for the delicate skin of children. It is not uncommon for the skin of babies and toddlers to become easily irritated with the use of heavy fragrances and other additives.

Although a hypoallergenic product is least likely to cause a reaction, it is still necessary for those with sensitive skin to read the ingredients list. As those with ultra sensitive skin know, ingredients that cause a reaction in one person will cause no reaction in another. Sometimes it is not a single ingredient but a combination that can be a problem. For the most part, ingredients chosen for hypoallergenic products are those that are known to cause the least amount of problems when used on the skin. Those who make it a point to pamper their skin often select products that are hypoallergenic.
