Calluses

A callus forms on the hands and feet as a result of dead skin cells that have hardened and accumulated in certain spots. At times they can be painful, especially when it comes to a foot callus on toes or heels. As they tend to develop through repeated and prolonged contact, dancers and musicians are known for having corns and calluses on their hands and feet. Often treatment consists of callus removal in some form but only if it is painful and interfering with everyday activity. Reducing the callus and ultimately eliminating the tight fitting shoes or equipment that caused the callus is the recommended course of treatment.

The difference between a corn and callus is that a corn consists of a raised bump surrounded by skin that is irritated. It is usually found on the top or side of the toe. Calluses can be found on the bottoms of feet or the top of fingers. A corn or a callus is likely to have rough, off colored flaky skin. A callus can be any size and do not often have any feeling in them. A corn can be somewhat painful when under pressure. When found at the top of finger, a corn or callus picture often shows skin that is cracked or yellowing.

Not to be confused with callus cell biology and callus regeneration, the buildup of dead skin cells often comes from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly or the prolonged use of hand tools or stringed musical instruments. As the skin begins to thicken, a hard protective layering of dead skin cells build up. This can cause discomfort in some cases. In the case of musicians or dancers it can help somewhat in their performance. Ballet dancers often have calluses on their toes from performing certain dance moves. The lack of feeling in toes or other pressure points can help make performing these dance moves easier.

When it comes to getting rid of a hard callus, some opt for a professional callus remover while others choose a method for getting rid of a hard callus at home. A callus remover can consist of handy tools and implements to simply soaking the feet and rubbing the callus with a towel. An electric callus remover can be helpful in shaping and sanding down dead skin on the feet. For calluses on the hands and feet, doing away with shoes that do not fit properly or wearing gloves can be very helpful. In some cases, special padding and inserts for shoes can be of great help.
