Birthmarks

Birthmarks are a natural occurrence that form on one's skin during gestation in the womb. The cause of birthmarks is basically undetermined but it has been found that they can be the result of anything from cellular damage to heredity. In earlier times, some cultures considered them signs or omens of the future and wisemen were often asked to interpret birth marks and their meanings. For the most part, birthmarks are not much more than a type of simple skin condition and there is rarely anything about them to be feared. They are not contagious and birthmark meanings are not reliable sources for forecasting future events.

There are several different types of birth marks. Some are raised and pink, as in the case of strawberry birthmarks. There are dark, purplish birthmarks that lay under the skin at capillary level called port wine stain birth marks. Both form in the womb while one is still a baby. Birth marks can get lighter or darker with age. Although rare, a birthmark due to vascular damage can at times be dangerous. This is especially true when the damage covers the eye or results in a brain birthmark that causes seizures. This can require surgery in order to alleviate problems.

Although there are times when extreme cases can call for birthmark removal, many opt to seek this treatment for cosmetic purposes. Laser treatment for birthmarks is by far the most commonly performed procedure in these situations. The treatment shrinks or stops the birthmark from increasing in size. Those with birth marks that are just under the skin are perfect candidates for this type of treatment. It often requires more than one treatment and several follow up visits to monitor removal progress. Those with birthmarks that are deep in the skin or attached to an internal organ will not be able to use laser treatment therapy.

Prominent figures and well known personalities have done much to shed light on what it means to have a birth mark. Mikhail Gorbachev and his famous port wine stain brought awareness to people about birthmarks as did the birthmark on Norah Jones hand. Seeing others with a strawberry birthmark or café au lait spots often helps others to feel more comfortable and relax the stigma sometime associated with birthmarks. Many have learned that having a birth mark does not delay or hinder one's prospects in any way shape or form. Many have increased their celebrity with their birth marks, such as Cindy Crawford.
